Location and local information

Huddersfield is a great mix of town and country. With vast countryside all around but everything you could possibly wish for in easy reach makes it a great place to call home for your university years. DIGS has two properties in Huddersfield – Ashenhurst and Storthes Hall Park. Situated half way between Leeds and Manchester makes Huddersfield the perfect blend for the action packed student life.

Guide to Huddersfield

Situated in West Yorkshire, Huddersfield is a market town with a rich history, including being the birthplace of rugby league. Just travel a few miles out of town and you have the famous Castle hill or you can spend the day at Hebden Bridge or just a short pop through to Holmfirth and be the envy of your parents as you visit the set of the world renowned ‘Last of the Summer Wine’.

Shopping

Shopping in the city has just stepped up a gear with the Kingsgate Shopping Centre which has an abundance of great places for you to splash some cash (don’t forget to take advantage of your student discounts!). There’s also The Packhorse Precinct and the Piazza Centre so you will never be short of a shop front to peruse! If you fancy a trip out a bit further, you can take a train or drive to Meadowhall in Sheffield or there’s Leeds city centre which is just 20 miles away.

Nightlife

Huddersfield’s nightlife has everything a student could possibly want for. Great bars, clubs and plenty of cheap nights out to fit any budget. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are especially popular for nights out and thanks to the late night bus service from the Digs campus, you’ll be ferried in and ferried home with no hassle. You’ll find the big chain bars such as Yates and Wetherspoons that offer great deals on food and drinks throughout the week and the “Camel Club” is hugely popular with past and present students as they play a wide selection of music genres; something to suit everyone! If you’re into live music “Vox” pulls a punch week on week for new live and tribute bands adding to Huddersfield’s reputation for being vibrant and action packed place to be.

Culture

Huddersfield is not only steeped in history but surrounded by cultural delights. Attractions such as the acclaimed Yorkshire Sculpture Park which is part of Europe’s leading open air art organisations is lucky enough to host some of the UK and international artist’s modern and contemporary work is within easy reach. If live performances are more your thing then the Lawrence Batley Theatre has a fantastic list of live performances from plays to comedy and showings of films, they also offer student discounts for you to take advantage of. There’s also an Odeon cinema to keep you up to date with all the latest blockbusters.
